When returning home from school yesterday, I arrived to find motorcycle police officers and two news vans. I asked a camera man getting out the KRON van, and he said it was "nothing," just a sting operation to catch drivers not stopping for pedestrians. It was nice out, so I decided to grab my police scanner, go up to the roof and watch for a little.
It turned out there were around eight motorcycle cops and two patrol cars. One plainclothes officer, who I've seen around the City before, would continually cross the street. If a car failed to stop, a motorcycle would quickly accelerate out of hiding and stop them. When I finally found the right channel on the radio, I got to hear some interesting details: One driver was let go with a warning because of his purple heart license plate. Another driver turned out to have a provisional license and a number of passengers under 20; his car ended up being towed. And finally, when they moved on to the next intersection on their schedule, one officer was left behind and had a hard time getting the others to tell him where to go.
